Best Independent Grocer
"Any number of places could win this title, but this one's expansionism gives it the edge this year. A fixture in Hastings-Sunrise, it's now expanded to the Drive, where its variety, value, and quality make it hard to beat. Sure, Drive Organics has great produce, but where's the red meat? Buying red meat on the Drive is a peculiar challenge, at least it was until Donald's arrived. It's almost as tough as finding decent fish. And the staff at Donald's are real staff, not dunderheaded hippie chicks in undershirts. Not that there's anything wrong with that, Moonbeam." |

East Hastings stretch a revolving door of intriguing stores
"Finally, the little-corner-grocery-that-could, Donald's Market (two, three, and four doors west of Nanaimo on the south side of Hastings), has expanded yet again. After taking over each failing neighbour's premises as its own popularity increased wildly, the always bustling family business recently opened a second Donald's on Commercial Drive just north of Broadway. Donald's proved for years that it could take business away from the relatively distant big boys by offering loss leaders and cheap, varied, and top-quality seasonal produce and dry goods, and the upstart grocers are now conducting business in the Commercial-and-Broadway Safeway's backyard. Talk about having confidence in your formula." |

Scanners and c-stores
"We can check the sales of each item and can even compare which products do best in particular months or on certain days. It gives me much greater control over what I order and when I order it." |

Shopper no longer boxed in
"I make a Saturday run to East Hastings where I can go to my favourite butcher, RIO-Friendly Meats, for their low-fat turkey sausages, Donald's for produce, then pick up bocconcini or risotto or some exotic new brand of olive oil at one of the half dozen Italian shops in the area." |
